Sunbright School History Facts


  • The first Sunbright School was located on Pea Ridge Road. 
  • The first class to graduate from the current school building was the class of 1986.
  • The first principal of Sunbright School was Mr. Sam A Bertram. 
  • When president John F Kennedy was assassinated, the principal of Sunbright School was John W Galloway.
  • When the attacks of 9/11happened, Mrs. Rosa Dotson was principal.
  • The first football game on our current football field was played during the 1994 – 1995 school year even though classes moved to the current building during the 1985 – 1986 building. Prior to the 1994 football season, the team continued to play back at the old school which is now the city park and walking track.
  • Mrs. Margaret Freels was the librarian at Sunbright School for many years (back in the old building). Her husband, Theodore (E.T) Freels was elected to the Tennessee House of Representatives. 
  • Many years ago, three different schools were closed over the course of several yeas and the students that attended those schools were transferred to Sunbright School. Those schools were: Burrville School, Chesnut Ridge School, and Deer Lodge School.
  • Sunbright School’s band reorganized a couple of years ago after 12 years without a band/music program.
  • Sunbright School used to have a boxing team. The first boxing team was started by the band director Mr. Ray Stephens.
  • The Sunbright High School Football team went undefeated in the 2000 football season during the 2000-2001 school year.
  • Ms Juanita Hall is a Sunbright Alumni who went on to Lincoln Memorial University where she played both college basketball and softball. She is in the LMU collegiate Hall of Fame.
  • Former Lady Tiger basketball player, Ms. Jane Pemberton also played basketball for the Tennessee Lady Vols.
